Strategies and best practices to increase classroom rigor will be shared.
01/25/2021 TLC-Science Teaching Physics with Children's Literature - This online workshop will empower you to teach basic concepts of physics using children’s literature. Topics covered include heat, thermodynamics, properties of gases, mass, weight, balance, center of mass, density, force and motion. These concepts will be taught using a guided inquiry model that uses hands-on activities to develop process skills such as observing, communicating, classifying, predicting outcomes, drawing conclusions, and communicating results. Books used include: Tightrope Poppy the Highwire Pig, Guji, Guji, Ten Rubber Ducks and Sally’s Great Balloon Adventure.
01/26/2021 TLC-Science Start with a Story - Use children's literature as a focus for engaging students in physical science topics. Learn more about thermal energy transfer with Sneezy the Snowman, by Maureen Wright. Annie Jump Cannon, Astronomer by Carole Gerber can help with a better understanding of stars and properties of light. The Black Rabbit by Philippa Leathers is the perfect way to teach shadows. Learn about properties of sound and visualizing sound as energy with The Noisy Paint Box by Barb Rosenstock. Workshop includes a copy of all trade books and non-consumable science materials.
02/3/2021 TLC-Science Make Them Think: Argumentation in Middle School Science - Participants will first learn about how argumentation strategies can help all students develop the knowledge and skills they need to be proficient in science. The participants will perform several lab investigation from start to finish as well as take home other examples. Teachers will then have time to reflect on their experiences during the lab investigation and ask clarifying questions.
